There is a wide range of reader technologies which can be used to identify a user

Proximity Readers can read cards, key ring tokens, and even specially adapted watches. They work by reading the card or token at a range of between 8cm to 3 metres, so are quick and easy to use. Proximity Cards can also double as an ID card by using printable versions.

Token Readers read a key ring style token and requires the token to be touched onto the reader. Tokens are also quick and easy to use.

Swipe Card readers read a magnetic strip on the back of a card. They require the card to be swiped through a slot in the reader. Swipe Cards can also double as an ID card by using printable versions.

The above technologies require the user to carry a token or card. The following options below do not require a token or card to be carried.

Keypads can be used to grant access via either a unique pin for each user or a generic pin for all users. They are less secure than other methods however provide a convenient method of low security access.

Finger Print Readers can be used to identify a user and grant access if the fingerprint is authorised. This provides a very convenient and secure method of entry and is the most popular biometric solution.

Other specialist Biometric readers include iris and retinal scan, speech, facial thermograms, and hand geometry although this technology is generally only used on high security specialist projects due to cost.
